Don't take him
Please let him stay with me
You don't need him or require him
in your scheme of things.
He isn't your smile in the morning
or kiss in the evening
He isn't even a name to you.
He isn't your twinkle in your eye
or laugh at a poor joke
He isn't even a soul to you.
He isn't your touch of hand
or sigh of love
He isn't even an emotion to you.
He brings me warmth, kindness
and hope
You bring him nothing but pain and fear.
So here are my words to you.
He will fight you with my strength behind him
He will push till he removes you from his flesh
He will kick and punch every day
and grasp every morning as a new frontier
in his fight with you.
Leave him, you don't need him.
The above poem has been inspired by my other halfs fight against testicular cancer. It has been one of those moments that have made us re-evaluate life and what it brings. There is, what appears like a positive outcome for my partner but for so many it is a daunting journey and the poem has been written on one of our 'fighting' days. I expect there will be more words on days when fight seems a long way in the distance.
