Lifted Pen
I held my pen a-hovering
Above a whitened page
and inhaled rather tentatively
on what to write today.
You cannot write about difference
class, creed, colour or plight
About what has moved you in the twilight hours
Or rendezvous at night.
There are no comedies or dramas
Just falsified and basic facts
For writing our opinions
May result in vicious attacks.
For holding my pen on paper
Exploring mind and thoughts
Have long been banished habits
and results in discipline and taunts
I wish we'd fought for freedom
To speak our differences and minds
Instead we became too scared to write
And became paper without the lines
